Scout is now well into the 2nd grade, she and Jem had forgot and moved beyond harassing Boo Radley. The children are now more interested in the actual town of Maycomb. The only problem is the route into town. One day while on the way to Maycombs business district the children pass by the home of Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, a argumentative old lady that lives two doors down who constantly shouts at Jem and Scout. Atticus wisely warns Jem to maintain his composure and to be a gentelman to Mrs. Dubose because she is very ill. One day Mrs.Dubose tells the kids that Atticus is not any better than the “niggers and trash he works for” this results in Jem losing his temper. Jem takes Scouts Baton and ruins all of Mrs. Dubose’s bushes. Jem gets punished, because of this incident. Everyday for a month Jem must read to Mrs. Dubose after school for a month. Scout often joins Jem and they encouter Mrs. Dubose temper tantrums. The reading sessions are getting longer than the last session. Once Mrs. Dubose dies, Atticus tells Jem that Mrs. Dubose was addicted to morphine and reading was a way to counter the addiction.
Character Summery-Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose – Is a elderly, bad tempered , racist women who lives two doors down from the Finches. She lives alone with only a colored girl who takes care of her. When she’s not in bed she spends her time wrapped in shawls in a wheelchair on the front porch. Although she is a mean women everyday Atticus would stop by, take his hat off, and wish her a cheerful good day as he admires her courage with her morphine addicton.
Setting- Mostly chapter 11 takes place in Mrs. Dubose house which is in Maycomb county, Alabama USA during the 1930’s. Mrs. Dubose house had a wood door and unlatched screen door which has a distinctive odor like all old rain-rotted houses with coal-oil lamps.
